The Glia Connection of the Glutamate/Glutamine Shuttle
نویسندگان
چکیده
Problem statement: Glia cells outnumber neurons but their role in synaptic transmission is still matter of debate. The recycling of Glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter, carried out by the glutamate/glutamine shuttle, requires the involvement of glia, suggesting their involvement in neurotransmission. Approach: This review focuses on novel functions of glia proteins involved in this cycle. Results: An activity-dependent interaction of glial glutamate transporters, the Na ATPase, the glutamine and glucose transporters might support glutamatergic neurotransmission. Conclusion: Glia cells that surround glutamatergic contacts, respond to synaptic activity and modify accordingly, the amount and function of the proteins involved in their interaction with neurons thus assuring a synaptic transmission.

Glutamatergic Transmission: A Matter of Three
Glutamatergic transmission in the vertebrate brain requires the involvement of glia cells, in a continuous molecular dialogue. Glial glutamate receptors and transporters are key molecules that sense synaptic activity and by these means modify their physiology in the short and long term. Posttranslational modifications that regulate protein-protein interactions and modulate transmitter removal a...

The generation of human neural tissue-like 3D structures holds great promise for disease modeling, drug discovery and regenerative medicine strategies. Promoting the establishment of complex cell-cell interactions, 3D culture systems enable the development of human cell-based models with increased physiological relevance, over monolayer cultures. Here, we demonstrate the establishment of neuron...
متن کاملNeuron–Glia Crosstalk and Neuropathic Pain: Involvement in the Modulation of Motor Activity in the Orofacial Region
Neuropathic orofacial pain (NOP) is a debilitating condition. Although the pathophysiology remains unclear, accumulating evidence suggests the involvement of multiple mechanisms in the development of neuropathic pain. Recently, glial cells have been shown to play a key pathogenetic role. Nerve injury leads to an immune response near the site of injury. Satellite glial cells are activated in the...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Glutamate and Multiple Sclerosis
Glutamate is the most important excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system which is involved in synaptic transmission, brain development, synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Normally, the enzymatic destruction of glutamate does not occur in the synaptic and extracellular space, but glutamate is removed through specific transporter proteins, leading to stabilization of glut...
متن کاملEffect of deep pentobarbital anesthesia on neurotransmitter metabolism in vivo: on the correlation of total glucose consumption with glutamatergic action.
The effect of deep barbiturate anesthesia on brain glucose transport, TCA cycle flux, and aspartate, glutamate, and glutamine metabolism was assessed in the rat brain using 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 9.4 T in conjunction with [1-13C] glucose infusions. Brain glucose concentrations were elevated, consistent with a twofold reduced cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (CMRglc) c...
